9:00am - 2:00pm
New Bethel Way of the Cross Church of Christ
23-25 West 118th Street, New York, NY

This year's Spring Work Day will take place at the New Bethel Way of the Cross Church of Christ in Harlem, New York. The building was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015 for its significance in cultural and architectural history. In 1901, architect Michael Bernstein designed the Moorish Revival style building as the the Congregation Shaare Zedek of Harlem synagogue for Harlem's emerging Jewish population at the end of the nineteenth century. While the Congregation Shaare Zedek moved to a new home in the UWS in the 1930s, the building continues to be an important religious institution serving the Harlem's diverse community.

The current congregation, New Bethel Way, has invited Preservation Alumni to participate in their Spring Work Day event. Come check out the building and get to know the Harlem community while helping to clean and maintain this historic Harlem landmark. Please note, the church will provide all cleaning supplies and materials, participants should wear comfortable clothing that may get dusty!
