Director of Preservation and Research
The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) seeks a highly motivated historic preservationist for a Director of Preservation and Research position.
GVSHP is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 and is the largest membership organization in Greenwich Village. It is the primary advocate for neighborhood and historic preservation in Greenwich Village and the East Village. The Society currently has five full-time employees, including the Director of Preservation and Research position, and several part-time consultants and interns.
Duties of the Director of Preservation and Research include:
* Assisting the Executive Director with all aspects of the organization’s preservation and advocacy work
* Overseeing and coordinating historic buildings research and managing research interns
* Overseeing and coordinating GVSHP’s design review of proposed new construction and changes to historic buildings
* Drafting testimony for public hearings and letters to city agencies
* Representing the organization at public hearings, community meetings, and other events
* Responding to questions from the public regarding landmarks and zoning regulations
* Responding to researchers queries about neighborhood or individual building history
* Monitoring and pursuing landmark and building violations
Candidates for the position must:
* Have a demonstrated knowledge of historic preservation, Landmarks Preservation Commission and zoning and land use regulations, and architectural history
* Have a familiarity with the Greenwich Village and East Village community
* Be a highly motivated, meticulous, detail-oriented self-starter willing to work more than 40 hours/week and occasional weekends and evenings as needed
* Be comfortable speaking in public, in both formal and informal settings
* Have strong writing skills
* Be knowledgeable about historic building research techniques
The ideal candidate would have:
* A degree in historic preservation.
* A strong knowledge of the history of the architectural, cultural history, and physical development of Greenwich Village, and of Greenwich Village’s preservation movements
* Experience interacting with and navigating the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, the City Planning Commission, the Board of Standards and Appeals, and the New York City Council
* Prior involvement in and connection to Greenwich Village community affairs
* Experience in advocacy before government bodies and in organizing community support for public policy initiatives
* Experience writing about architecture, urban planning, and New York City history
* Experience managing interns or staff
* Knowledge of/experience with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Photoshop, Google SketchUp, Quark, and web design programs such as Contribute or Dreamweaver
* Experience with on-line building research using resources such as ACRIS, BIS, and Property Shark

Executive Director: Architectural Heritage Center
The Bosco-Milligan Foundation, a Portland, Oregon-based non-profit historic preservation organization, is expanding its executive administrative staff to include a new position, Executive Director: Architectural Heritage Center. The Center is owned and operated by the Bosco-Milligan Foundation. This position will oversee important functions that have been the responsibility of the Bosco-Milligan Foundation's Executive Director, whose position has been redefined to include significant new advocacy and other historic preservation-related initiatives (and will continue to oversee Education, Exhibits, Collections & Library.)
The new Executive Director - Architectural Heritage Center position will play a significant role in Fund Development, and will also oversee the Marketing/Membership, IT/Facilities, Volunteer Coordination, and Office Administrative staff.

Senior Project Manager
We offer a seasoned Historic Preservation leader with 20 or more years of experience a growth and leadership opportunity. The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for managing the Historic Design Practice Group along with the Design Principal, George Skarmeas.
The appropriate candidate may have managed other kinds of institutional projects but must have a demonstrated vocational interest in doing Historic Preservation.
The manager will work with clients to understand the overall scope of the project, and make appropriate reccomendations. They will be responsible for business development, managing client relationships, negotiating contacts, managing budgets, and resolving staffing issues. They will work closely with other RMJM Hillier teams who are doing work on projects which will have Historic Preservation as a component of the overall project.
The manager must have a very sound technology background and know which kinds of systems are appropriate to use to solve the problems presented. They will mentor junior team members.
The appropriate candiate will have a graduate degree in architecture or historic preservation and be licensed professional.
Senior Designer
A Senior Designer with 5 or more years of experience designing buildings of historic signifigance will have an excellent growth and leadership opportunity in our Historic Design Practice Group.
They should be able to design interventions required because of the use of more modern building technology or because the building is being used for a purpose other then the one it was originally intended.
They will need to be an excellent team player and be capable of mentoring junior team members. They must be CAD literate. They must be familiar with materials, architecture history, and construction technology.
Interns
The candidates should have a degree in Historic Preservation or Architecture. If the degree is in Architecture, they must have a demonstrated vocation for Historic Preservation.
They must have a year or two of experience with HAP (Historic American Buildings) or experience working on comparable projects.
They must be able to demonstrate that they are good at documentation and that they have basic understanding of historic structures. They must be Computer literate and have excellent CAD skills.

FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts is seeking an intern to assist in the daily operation of an independent non-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving the architectural legacy, livability, and sense of place of the Upper East Side and its 126 individual landmarks and six historic districts. The intern will assist the Executive Director with advocacy issues and special projects such as our current work expanding the boundaries of the Upper East Side Historic District. In addition, the candidate will work with community groups and government agencies on preservation issues and projects, appearing before the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, the community board and other public venues. The intern will, when needed, help with general office administration and special events.

INTRODUCTION
The City of Los Angeles Office of Historic Resources is seeking a talented architect with historic preservation experience to advise the City’s Cultural Heritage Commission and to review projects affecting Los Angeles’ historic properties.
The Office of Historic Resources is creating a comprehensive and balanced historic preservation program for the City of Los Angeles, anchored by the City’s first-ever Citywide Historic Resources Survey. The Office of Historic Resources staffs the City’s five-member Cultural Heritage Commission, administers the Mills Act property tax incentive program for historic properties, reviews applications for changes to designated historic properties, and works with owners who want to rehabilitate their properties.
The Associate Preservation Architect, to be hired under the City’s Arts Manager II civil service classification, will assist the Office’s lead Historic Preservation Architect in implementing the wide-ranging preservation programs of the City of Los Angeles.
DUTIES
- Review and process new applications for City Historic-Cultural Monuments; prepare written staff reports on Monument applications for the Cultural Heritage Commission
- Review proposed alterations to Historic-Cultural Monuments in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards; conduct reviews for permit clearances on projects affecting historic properties
- Help oversee the City’s Mills Act Historical Property Contracts Program; review and process new Mills Act applications and conduct inspections of Mills Act properties to ensure compliance with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards
- Serve as a resource to the Community Planning Bureau of the Department in overseeing the City’s Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) program encompassing 22 historic districts; review and comment on Certificate of Appropriateness applications in HPOZs
SALARY

QUALIFICATIONS
- At least two years of previous work experience in historic preservation
- Strong knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards; experience in interpreting and applying the Standards in addressing complex historic preservation projects
